Welcome to Omaha, Nebraska.
Omaha (pop: 390,007) is Nebraska's largest city and metropolitan area at around 840,000 people. The hub of the state, Omaha lies in the hilly Missouri Valley across from Iowa with a wonderful "old west" downtown, beautiful parks, stately mansions, and a growing skyline. It is the county seat of Douglas County. Located on the eastern edge of Nebraska, it is on the Missouri River about 20 miles north of where the Platte River empties into the Missouri. Council Bluffs, Iowa lies directly across the Missouri River from Omaha. Together, the two cities form the core of the 52nd-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Famous for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company, Omaha was a key point in the westward expansion of the country and continues to grow and prosper today. A fairly clean city, Omaha is a surprise in the Great Plains! Oh, and the zoo kicks some serious...you know...
Omaha's central location in the "heartland" of the United States has been an important factor in the building of its economic strengths. Located on the western bank of the Missouri River, the city has been an important agricultural and transportation center since its establishment in the late 1850's. In its earliest history, Omaha was a trading center and the "Gateway to the West." From these roots, Omaha has steadily grown until it is now the 48th largest city and the 60th largest metro area in the nation. The city limits of Omaha extend over 100 square miles. The five county metropolitan area covers nearly 2,500 square miles. Local terrain consists of gently rolling hills, with metro area elevations ranging from 965 feet to approximately 1,300 feet above sea level. The Omaha metropolitan area is served by several public and private school systems. There are approximately 113,000 children in metro area public schools. There are three public school districts within Omaha city limits (Omaha Public School District, Millard Public School District and Westside Community School District). Included in these area educational institutions are two community college, two major medical and pharmacy schools, one dental school, one law school, five continuing education programs and several public and private technical trade and business schools.
